Guide to choosing the best umbrella base
There is only one big problem with the artificial shadow of the best umbrellas: how to make them stable? We are not on the beach, so it is not possible to plant the umbrella in the ground, completing the most classic and sandy actions. We’re not even talking about umbrellas as small as those on the beach, so the method of manual anchoring in the ground just isn’t the best choice. Only by choosing a perfect umbrella base can you open them in peace and enjoy the cool shade offered.
The umbrella (now you can choose from products with impeccable design and that, in some cases, look like real suspended gazebos) is an outdoor furnishing element with a timeless appeal. The shapes and the quality of the materials used to have improved, but its charm remains intact and its utility remains immense.
How nice to have lunch in the shade of a large umbrella, perhaps enjoying the food cooked on a barbecue, relaxing directly in the garden. So why risk seeing the large umbrella swing under which you are relaxing? Why risk dropping it? Why risk breaking it? Why risk getting hurt? That’s why we decided to give you some information to choose the best umbrella, to stabilize them perfectly, with minimum effort and spending very little.
Which umbrella base to choose?
Functional and with high aesthetic potential: garden umbrellas are very useful for protecting themselves from the dangers of the sun on the hottest summer days (and from the prying eyes of neighbors), but they also manage to beautify the garden, with simplicity and elegance.
Of all types and for all budgets: umbrellas are made of various materials, some lighter, others heavier, and can have the most varied shapes and sizes. They are ready to let us spend moments of pure shady relaxation, but they need our little help. We are the ones who must guarantee maximum stability, especially when it comes to models with a wide opening. The only way to do this is to choose the perfect umbrella base for the chosen model.
How to choose the right umbrella base?
The shape of the umbrella is not important, since the first thing to take into consideration is the width of the same. The larger the diameter, the lower the stability. The umbrella base must be heavier and have a wider surface when the umbrella is bigger but also taller.
Let’s make some practical example: a base with a width of about 18-31 inches and a weight of just under 30 pounds, will be able to support an umbrella with a diameter of less than 9 ft. However, as we said before, garden umbrellas are, in most cases, much larger. So, better to choose a wider and heavier base.
Which umbrella base to choose?
- We can divide the bases into three categories : plastic. These must be filled with water (or sand or similar materials), but they are useful for supporting small umbrellas.
- In stone or concrete : in our opinion the best. They can be chosen according to the size, but in any case, they will guarantee greater stability, since the weight (even of the smaller ones) is perfect to protect the umbrella even from rather strong gusts of wind. A base about 2 ft wide and weighing just under 65 lbs allows you to keep an umbrella still with an opening of more than 9 ft in diameter. The stone bases can reach a weight of 120 lbs or more.
- Bases for garden umbrellas in iron or steel : in great demand and with characteristics of size and weight similar to those of the previous solutions. Only the aesthetics and durability change.
